Today, large supermarket chains, retailers and players in the food and beverage sector are faced with a new challenge or, rather, an interesting new opportunity: the optimization of logistics.
The optimization of logistics involves the reduction of storage costs, space and rent for warehouses and shops, but also the reduction of picking and delivery errors which lead to significant financial damage and inefficiency along the return and reverse logistics chain.
This was the challenge of Conad Nord Ovest, a cooperative large-scale distribution company based in Cagliari that with the purchase of 15 Modula storage systems was able to:
store over 35% of the inventory in storage systems in just 5% of the warehouse surface
handle over 4,000 packages per day
serve more than 50 stores per day.
Modula vertical systems have made it possible to reduce not only the footprint but also picking errors, and to significantly speed up order preparation.
"The picking of goods takes place in an absolutely simple manner without margins of error and the flow management is connected to the WMS of the vertical storage systems" says Roberto Pau, Logistics Manager, who promoted this innovation.
It is estimated that order picking represents about 55% of total warehouse expenses, and probably 60-65% of this is due to the time operators spend moving within the warehouse. Modula automated vertical storage systems implement the goods-to-man logic, saving the time operators previously spent moving around to pick the goods.
“With Modula, the approach to the management of goods has changed and the physical effort required of operators has been reduced. The focal point is ergonomics" say the operators who are now working with the vertical storage systems. The most interesting aspects are the improvement of ergonomics and the possibility of minimizing the risks associated with regular warehouse activities, because today the well-being of personnel is a priority for companies like never before and automation is certainly an effective and safe solution.
